About Dan

Dan is a father of four, trying to raise a toddler without forgetting how to parent a 25-year-old. His three older kids, Ben, Abby, and Jacob, are all in their 20s and living full lives of their own. Just as he was adjusting to life with quiet hallways and adult conversations, the universe handed him a new chapter: Ruby, a wildly verbal toddler with opinions, questions, and a deep love of bath crayons.

Now in his 50s, Dan is learning to balance potty training with prom memories, sleepless nights with grown-up milestones, and stuffed animal negotiations with real-world business calls. By day, he’s a technology executive in the software world. By night (and often by 5:37 a.m.), he’s “Dada”, reading bedtime stories, singing made-up songs, and occasionally trying to pretend he enjoys the wooden toy latte Ruby insists on serving him every morning.

Dan lives in Toronto with his partner Lori, the calm in his chaos and the co-architect of this second parenting act. When he’s not knee-deep in toddler life, he loves spending time with all four of his kids, traveling, working out, and playing a fiercely addictive amount of online chess.

Diapers for Two is his way of making sense of this surreal, hilarious, heart-expanding life, and maybe helping other parents feel a little less alone while they try to do the same.

As a mom of two grown kids, I've seen it all-and Diapers for Two by Dan Shimmerman still has me laughing out loud. Dan's honest, no-filter take on parenting is equal parts hilarious and relatable. In one episode he dives into the absurdity of "powdered kale dust" with the perfect mix of sarcasm and insight. He has a real gift for turning everyday parenting chaos into comedy gold. Whether you're knee deep in diapers or just reminiscing about the good (and messy) old days, Diapers for Two is a must listen, especially for new parents who need a laugh and a little perspective.

If you’re a parent, thinking about becoming a parent, or even vaguely aware of what a toddler is, you need this podcast in your life. Diapers for Two somehow manages to be hilarious, heartfelt, self-aware, and totally unfiltered, and I’m hooked. I started with Episode 2: Daddy’s Popsicle and nearly spit out my coffee laughing. Dan has this incredible way of telling a story that feels like you’re sitting across from him at a diner at 7am after zero sleep and a night full of toddler chaos. Then I listened to Episode 4: Accidental Rituals and was absolutely floored by how it turned from a goofy bedtime routine into a gut-punch reflection about being a divorced dad. I cried. Then I texted my dad. No joke. Also, Episode 1 (Toto, We’re Not in Kansas Anymore) made me feel deeply seen as a modern parent navigating baby monitors, parenting TikToks, and the constant fear of doing it all “wrong.” Dan’s warmth, humor, and honesty come through in every minute. This isn’t just a parenting podcast, it’s a love letter to family, to second chances, and to the absolute circus that is raising kids at any age. Can’t wait for the next episode.

I was recommended this podcast by a friend who thought I’d relate, and I ended up binge-listening to all five episodes in a single evening (yes, even while folding laundry and peeling a toddler off the kitchen counter). ‘Four Kids, Four Menus’ made me laugh so hard, and ‘Daddy’s Popsicle’ should come with a laugh warning! Dan’s storytelling is sharp, raw, and relatable, especially for those of us parenting with a few more grey hairs and less sleep. This show somehow manages to be both absurd and touching in the same breath. Subscribed and already refreshing for the next drop!

As a father of three (two in college, one who is 6), I didn’t know how much I needed this podcast until I hit play. Dan somehow captures the chaos, comedy, and quiet heartbreak of parenting in a way that feels deeply familiar. ‘Is This Gentle Enough for You?’ hit home in a big way. I’ve had that exact argument with myself at bedtime. And ‘Accidental Rituals’ made me pause and text my kids, no joke. It’s rare to find something this funny and this real. If you’re a dad trying to be present while holding it together with caffeine and willpower, this show’s for you.
